CCPA Announces 2009 Season

By: Tristan Fuge · Sep 8, 2008  · Los Angeles

Covina Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) has announced the production schedule for its 2009 season, which will include six mainstage productions and a number of special events.

The season will open with the Los Angeles premiere of The Light in the Piazza, January 23-February 15, the story of an American tourist in Tuscany who falls in love with a handsome Florentine. Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park, March 6-April 5, will follow with the story of a newlywed couple, their 6 floor walkup apartment with a leaky skylight and an eccentric neighbor, in-laws, jobs, misunderstandings, and the beginnings of love. CCPA will present a selection from the Festival of New American Musicals, May 7-10, which will be announced early 2009.

The summer will see a Broadway musical, June 26-August 9, to be announced at a later date. Glimmer, Glimmer and Shine, September 11-October 11, will explore two generations of estrangement and reconciliation, all set to the rhythms of jazz and the limelight. The mainstage season will close with H.M.S Pinafore-In Concert, November 19-22.

Special events next year include An Evening with Jason Robert Brown and the Caucasian Rhythm Kings (February 20-21), An Evening with Fritz Coleman (April 10-11), Not Fade Away: A 50's and 60's Rock n Roll Extravaganza (May 15-16), In the Mood: A Spectacular 1930s and 40s Musical Tribute (August 14-15), and Rick Najera's Latinologues, October 16-18.

Hugh Jackman's considerable sex appeal can't save Baz Luhrmann's bloated film about an unlikely Down Under romance.
