Spring Awakening to Make London Debut in January 2009

The Tony Award-winning Broadway hit Spring Awakening will receive its UK premiere in West London's Lyric Hammersmith, January 23-February 28, ahead of a hoped-for West End transfer. No casting has been announced.

The alt-rock musical, which is directed by Michael Mayer and choreographed by Bill T. Jones, has music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, and is based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 play of the same name about sexual discovery. Set in 19th-century Germany, the story centers on brilliant student Melchior, his troubled friend Moritz, and Wendla, a beautiful girl on the verge of womanhood.

The theater is currently hosting David Farr's 50th anniversary production of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party, while Love, a romantic musical created by Iceland's Theatre Vesturport, will run May 28-June 21.
