Broadway/L.A. has announced the lineup for its 2009 season, with all productions scheduled to play at the Pantages Theatre, where the sit-down production of Wicked will conclude its run in January.
The seven-show Broadway/L.A. season will kick off with the return of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, The Phantom of the Opera (January 21-February 21), based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux. It will be followed by the musical Grease (March 10-22), where Sandy, Danny, Rizzo and the gang from Rydell High hand-jive their way to Los Angeles, directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall.
The season will continue with Mamma Mia! (April 7-19), the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA. Next up will be Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story on Stage (April 28-June 14), based on the film and telling the story of 17-year-old Frances 'Baby' Houseman and her romance with dance instructor Johnny Castle.
Fiddler on the Roof follows July 22-August 29, starring Topol, who originated the role of Tevye on London's West End Company, and went on to international stardom based on his deeply moving performance in Norman Jewison's film adaptation.
Based on the MGM film, Legally Blonde the Musical will run August 12-September 6. The subscription season will conclude with Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, November 10-January 3.
In addition, Broadway/L.A. will host two add-on productions that will also be presented at the Pantages. Original stars Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp star in the national tour of the rock musical Rent, which comes to LA March 3-8. And Rain - The Beatles Experience arrives March 31-April 5, allowing audiences to experience what Beatlemania was all about.
