Full casting has been announced for the English National Opera's production of Candide, to run June 23-July 12, with an official opening on June 25.
The production, which will be directed by Robert Carsen, will star Toby Spence as Candide, Anna Christy and Marnie Breckenridge alternating as Cunegonde, Alex Jennings as Doctor Pangloss/Voltaire, Beverley Klein as the Old Woman, Robert Chafin as the Grand Inquisitor, Mairead Burke as Paquette, Mark Stone as Maximillian, Ferlyn Brass as Cacambo, and Simon Butteriss, Adrian Brand, Graeme Lauren, James Glenister, and Graeme Denby in multiple roles.
The show will be conducted by Rumon Gamba, and feature choreography by Rob Ashford, sets by Michael Levine, costumes by Buki Shiff, and lighting by Carsen and Peter Van Praet.
The show is based on the novella by Voltaire. It features music by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Richard Wilbur, Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, and Bernstein. The original adaptation by Hugh Wheeler has been re-adapted by Carsen and Ian Burton.
