Frances Sternhagen will take over the role of Virginia Woolf from Kathleen Chalfant in Vita & Virginia on Monday, March 17 and 31. Chalfant, who is also starring Off-Broadway in Dead Man Cell's Phone, will be filming a role in the Julia Roberts-Clive Owen film Duplicity. She will play Virginia at the March 24 performance and at all performances through April 28.

The play, adapted by Eileen Atkins from the correspondence between writers Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West, takes place in the 1920s and 1930s and through the first years of WWII. It deals, in a very timely way, with women seeking their place in the world as they face personal and professional conflicts as well as the looming world war. The show also stars Patricia Elliott as Sackville-West and is directed by Pamela Berlin.

Sternhagen is a two-time Tony Award winner for The Good Doctor and The Heiress. Her many other Broadway credits include Edward Albee's Seascape, Steel Magnolias, Morning's at Seven, and On Golden Pond.
