Angela Robinson to Replace Withers-Mendes in The Color Purple

Angela Robinson will take over the role of Shug Avery from original cast member Elisabeth Withers-Mendes in The Color Purple, beginning February 1. The show, currently at the Broadway Theatre, will close on Sunday, February 24; Withers-Mendes will return to play the final two performances on that date.

Robinson's Broadway credits include Wonderful Town, Bells Are Ringing, and Play On! Additional credits Radiant Baby, Call the Children Home, and the national tours of Wizard of Oz and Dreamgirls. Withers-Mendes received a Tony nomination for her work in The Color Purple.

The production also currently stars Zonya Love as Celie, Chaka Khan as Sofia, BeBe Winans as Harpo, LaKisha Jones as the Church Soloist and Sofia (at matinees), Montego Glover as Nettie, Alton Fitzgerald White as Mister, and Krisha Marcano as Squeak.
