The one-man show Thurgood, starring Laurence Fishburne as the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, will begin previews April 12 at the Booth Theater, with an opening set for April 30.
Written by George Stevens Jr., Thurgood is a biographical portrait of Marshall, who rose from a childhood in the backstreets of Baltimore to the Supreme Court of the United States. The show was previously seen at the Westport Country Playhouse in 2006, with James Earl Jones in the role. As with that production, the Broadway mounting will be helmed by Leonard Foglia.
Fishburne won Tony, Drama Desk , Outer Critic's Circle, and Theater World awards for his role in August Wilson's Two Trains Running, and last appeared on Broadway in the Roundabout's revival of The Lion in Winter. Additional stage credits include L.A. productions of Fences (for which he won an L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award) and Without Walls (for which he received an NAACP Theater Award). He received an Academy Award nomination for What's Love Got to Do With It, and additional film work includes The Matrix and Apocalypse Now. Fishburne also received the Emmy Award for Tribeca.
Stevens is best known as a television producer, writer, and director. He has won 11 Emmy Awards. In 1991, he wrote and directed the television movie Separate but Equal, in which Sidney Poitier played Marshall. Foglia's Broadway directorial credits include On Golden Pond, Wait Until Dark, and Master Class.
