 | | Annette Bening | The Geffen Playhouse has announced plans for its 2007-2008 season.
The season begins the week of September 10 with Suzan-Lori Park's 365 Days/365 Plays, under the direction of Michael Hackett. Up next, the Main Stage season kicks off with award-winning actress Christine Lahti in the late Wendy Wasserstein's Third (September 11-October 21), directed by Maria Mileaf. The play concerns Laurie Jameson (Lahti), a professor at a prestigious New England university who is convinced that one of her students is a plagiarist, despite any substantial evidence.
It will be followed by the world premiere of the musical Atlanta, written by Grammy Award winner Marcus Hummon and Heroes star Adrian Pasdar (November 20-30), about a Yankee soldier in the Civil War who assumes the persona of a Confederate solider in order to stay alive. The show takes the place of the previously announced Cy Coleman-David Zippel musical The Best Is Yet to Come.
Next up, Oscar nominee Annette Bening stars in the American premiere of Joanna Murray Smith's The Female of the Species (February 5-March 16), about a feminist author whose world is turned upside down by the arrival of a female fan. The fourth mainstage selection, which is still to be determined, will be followed by the world premiere of Donald Margulies' The Elephant in the Room (June 17-July 27), about a seasoned photojournalist who tries to resume a normal life at home after being wounded in the war.
The Geffen's Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater will host the world premiere of Jane Anderson's Quality of Life (October 2-November 18) starring Emmy Award winner Laurie Metcalf. The play focuses on a conservative Christian couple still recovering from the loss of their daughter who decide to visit their left-leaning cousins, a couple with troubles of their own. The Kenis will also host Emergence-See! (dates TBA), Daniel Beaty's award-winning solo show about contemporary New Yorkers confronting the reemergence of a slave ship in the Hudson River.
