Gary Mauer will play the title role in the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, April 30-May 19, while star Howard McGillin takes a vacation. McGillin, who has played the role over 1,800 times, will return to the company on May 21.

Mauer holds the record for playing the supporting role of Raoul in the Broadway production of Phantom, which he did in two separate stints between 1996-2001. He joined the Broadway company as a swing in 1995.

In addition, Mauer played the Phantom on the show's national tour from January 2004 until April 2006. He also participated in the January 9, 2006 Broadway performance when Phantom became the longest-running show in Broadway history. The show recently celebrated its 8,000th performance.

Phantom is directed by Harold Prince, and features a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart, and Richard Stilgoe, and a book by Webber and Stilgoe based on the novel by Gaston Leroux.

The current cast includes Jennifer Hope Willis, Michael Shawn Lewis, George Lee Andrews, David Cryer, Anne Runolfsson, Marilyn Caskey, and Roland Rusinek.
