 | | Max Stafford Clark | The Roundabout Theatre Company will present the American premiere of J.T. Rogers' London hit The Overwhelming, September 28-December 23, at the Laura Pels Theatre. The show, which will officially open on October 17, will be directed by Max Stafford-Clark, who helmed the 2006 London production. Casting and design team will be announced shortly.
The play concerns an American family, newly arrived in Rwanda in 1994, who come face-to-face with the understanding that nothing and no one around them is what they understood it to be. Rogers' other plays include Madagascar and White People. Stafford-Clark has directed dozens of shows around the world, including Fanshen, Our Country's Good, Top Girls, and The Seagull.
This is the second confirmed show of the Roundabout's 2007-2008 season. The company will present Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park With George at Studio 54 beginning in January 2008. It may also produce Brian Friel's The Home Place, which was scheduled to play the Pels this summer.
The Roundabout is currently presenting revivals of Craig Lucas' Prelude to a Kiss at the American Airlines Theatre and the Tom Jones-Harvey Schmidt musical 110 in the Shade at Studio 54. Its next two productions will be Stephen Lang's solo show Beyond Glory at the Pels and John Van Druten's Old Acquaintance, starring Harriet Harris, Margaret Colin, and Lily Rabe, at the American Airlines.
