The show opened at the Schoenfeld on October 5 following a pre-Broadway run in San Francisco.
Conceived and originally choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line has a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch, and lyrics by Edward Kleban. The revival was directed by Bob Avian, the show's original co-choreographer, and Baayork Lee has restaged the original choreography. The production has scenery by Robin Wagner, costumes by Theoni V. Aldredge, lighting by Tharon Musser (adapted by Natasha Katz), and sound by Acme Sound Partners. Musical direction and supervision is by Patrick Vaccariello.
The original production of A Chorus Line won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical; and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. It ran for nearly 15 years, playing 6,137 performances.
