TheatreWorks presents the Tony-Award winning The Elephant Man, by Bernard Pomerance. Jane Farnol directs. This intensely human drama tells the true tale of the tragically disfigured John Merrick. Exploited as a sideshow freak in Victorian England, Merrick is rescued by an ambitious and brilliant young surgeon, Frederick Treves, who at first is fascinated by the research possibilities, only to discover that beneath Merrick's grotesque exterior is a human being with feelings, hopes and dreams. Merrick is introduced to high society and becomes dependent on the success his deformity brings him. As Merrick struggles to become normal, Treves begins to question normalcy itself. Additional performance 2:00 p.m. on Sunday May 8.
