Yale Repertory Theatre Presents the World Premiere of Indecent

Indecent, presented by Yale Repertory Theatre in association with La Jolla Playhouse, begins its run tonight.

The play, which features original music, is inspired by the true and controversial events of the 1923 Broadway debut of God of Vengeance by Sholem Asch. The divisive play is seen as alternately a seminal work of Jewish culture or traitorous libel. Vogel’s play chronicles the incendiary play’s complicated history and examines the decisions and paths of the artists who risked their careers, and even lives, to perform it.

Indecent was written by Paula Vogel, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for her play How I Learned to Drive. The final creation of the play was a collaboration between Vogel and director Rebecca Taichman. The cast includes Katrina Lenk, Mimi Lieber, Max Gordon Moore, Steven Rattazzi, Richard Topol, Adina Verson, and Lenny Wolpe, as well as muscians Lisa Gutkin, Aaron Halva, and Travis W. Hendrix.

The creative team includes Lisa Gutkin and Aaron Halva (original music), David Dorfman (choreography), Aaron Halva (music direction), Riccardo Hernandez (set design), Emily Rebholz (costume design), Christopher Akerlind (lighting design), Matt Hubbs (sound design), Tal Yarden (projections), and Amanda Spooner (stage manager).

Performances will run through October 24.
