Rags begins performances tonight at Goodspeed Opera House.

Rags features a score by Charles Strouse and Stephen Schwartz and a book by Joseph Stein. For this production, which Rob Ruggiero directs, Strouse and Schwartz have teamed up with David Thompson, who has adapted Stein's original script.

The show is described as follows: "Welcome to the new world! Fresh from Ellis Island, a young mother and her son search for a new life and a sense of home as the 20th century beckons. The streets of Manhattan’s Lower East Side may not be paved with gold, but they echo with the music of opportunity, optimism, and hope. A ravishing score by the songwriters of Wicked and Annie colors a sweeping saga of America’s immigrant past. Celebrate our rich roots in Goodspeed’s new adaptation of a neglected masterpiece of the musical theatre."

Samantha Massell takes on the role of Rebecca, with Christian Michael Camporin as David, Sean MacLaughlin as Sal, Sara Kapner as Bella, Adam Heller as Avram, Mitch Greenberg as Jack, Emily Zacharias as Anna, Lori Wilner as Rachel, David Harris as Max, Nathan Salstone as Ben, J.D. Daw, Ellie Fishman, Danny Lindgren, Sarah Solie, Jeff Williams, Catalina Gaglioti, Giovanni DiGabriele, and Gordon Beck.

The production will have choreography by Parker Esse, with a creative team that also includes Michael Schweikardt (scenic design), Linda Cho (costumes), John Lasiter (lighting), Jay Hilton (sound), Mark Adam Rampmeyer (wig and hair design), Dan DeLange (orchestrations), David Loud (vocal arrangements), and Michael O'Flaherty (musical director).

Performances continue through December 10.
