For many people, the Oscar, Emmy, and two-time Tony Award-winning actor Christopher Plummer (Inherit the Wind) will always be Captain von Trapp from The Sound of Music. But throughout his career he has proven himself capable of encompassing a wide range of roles, and on April 15, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center will honor him for his work on both stage and screen with its Monte Cristo Award. The prize will be presented at a gala dinner to be held at the Edison Ballroom.

Plummer has won Tony Awards for his performances in the musical Cyrano and the one-man show Barrymore. He has also been Tony nominated for performances in Inherit the Wind, King Lear, No Man’s Land, Othello, and J.B. Along with his Broadway credits, the acting legend has appeared at London’s Royal National Theatre, winning an Evening Standard Award for Becket, and was a leading member of Canada’s Stratford Festival in its formative years.

He received an Oscar in 2012 for his work in Beginners, and was also Academy Award-nominated for The Last Station. His screen career includes over 100 other films, including The Man Who Would Be King, Battle of Britain, Waterloo, Fall of The Roman Empire, A Beautiful Mind, Man in the Chair, Syriana, and, of course, The Sound of Music. In addition, the performer has two Emmys for his performances in Madeline and Arthur Hailey’s The Moneychangers.

The Monte Cristo Award is presented annually to a prominent theater artist in recognition of a distinguished career exemplifying Eugene O’Neill’s “pioneering spirit, unceasing artistic commitment, and excellence.”
