World Premieres by Eric Coble, Victoria Stewart Set for Cleveland Play House 2012-2013 Season

Cleveland Play House has announced the productions set for its 2012-2013 season, which will include two world premieres.

The season will open with a co-production with Arizona Theatre Company of David Maraniss’ recent Broadway hit Lombardi (September 14-October 7), about Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi. Then, Giovanna Sardelli will direct Matthew Lopez’s play about race, religion, and freedom The Whipping Man (November 2-25). The season’s first world premiere will be A Carol for Cleveland (November 30-December 23), an adaptation by Eric Coble of Les Roberts’ novella about family, second chances, and the kindness of strangers. Associate artistic director Laura Kepley will direct.

To kick off the new year, artistic director Michael Bloom will direct Bell, Book and Candle (January 11-February 3), John van Druten’s play about a witch living in New York City in the 1950’s. The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith (February 15-March 10), will showcase the music of Smith, conceived and directed by Joe Brancato, written by Angelo Parra, with musical direction by Miche Braden.

Syracuse Stage and Cleveland Play House will co-produce David Lindsay-Abaire’s Tony Award-winning play about class, morality, and the American dream Good People (March 22-April 14). Laura Kepley will direct. The season will close with the world premiere of Victoria Stewart’s Rich Girl (April 12-May 5), a modern day adaptation of Henry James’ comedy Washington Square, directed by Michael Bloom.
