WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Bruised Orange Theater Company is pleased to announce its second world premier for its third season - a cycle of Internationally-themed original works focusing on Russian novelist and political agitator, Fyodor Dostoevsky. The follow up to last fall's critically-acclaimed Siberian Mouth by Chris Bower, artistic director Clint Sheffer's bold reconstruction of Dostoevsky's dark-comic masterpiece Demons is complete with the scandal, satire, and class conflict which made Dostoevsky's novel so shocking and prophetic in 1873 - and makes this fresh retelling equally as provocative and relevant today. We catch up to Nikolai Stavrogin in St. Petersburg, where he marries a crippled madwoman on a dare, gets in drunken brawls, and wins decorations as a cavalry officer. The inscrutable Nikolai then returns to the provincial Russian backwater of his boyhood, bites the mayor, and is sent away to Switzerland. Three years have gone by. Now, he's returned home yet again, and this time, he's joined by a small but dedicated throng of messianic followers. This cabal of nihilists, socialists, idealists, and opportunists begin stirring up trouble on all fronts while the new mayor is busy constructing tiny replicas of notable train stations, and the rest of the upper crust plan a gala event, with catering. Despite himself, Nikolai helps weave an intricate web of conspiracies, arranged marriages, trysts, and intrigues, which threaten to ensnare the whole village - and maybe even all of Russia.
