Featuring the music and lyrics of Jon Langford and playwright Loren Crawford, Goldbrick draws from Langford's solo releases as well as from his work with the Mekons to illuminate the ongoing American story of immigration. Goldbrick follows the journey of Everyman (Larry Yando) from Wales making a life for himself in America. Through video projections, his experiences are inter-woven with the voices and dreams of others who come to America for a better life. Onstage, Everyman interacts with memories of the past, icons of a better future and obstacles of the present

I loved this play. I really enjoy the alternative approach to theater Collaboraction and Walkabout take, specifically with Goldbrick. Essentially, this play is about a mans immigration to America in pursuit of the American Dream. The portrayal of America in Everymans eyes--the name of the character is Everyman--evolves throughout the play, as he distances himself from his family in Wales, struggles with finding jobs, and learns both the good and the bad of what it means to live in America in any generation. Although Goldbrick is a Musical, its not at all cheesy or corny. Goldbrick reminds me of the eccentricities of James Joyce and the ambition and struggle found in Frank McCourts Angelas Ashes.
If youre interested in alternative and thought-provoking theater, definitely find yourself some tickets for Goldbrick.
