By Andy Propst • Nov 19, 2009 • Chicago

Baayork Lee will direct and choreograph a new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Flower Drum Song to play at the Center for Asian Arts and Media at Columbia College in Chicago next August. The production is scheduled to begin as a concert in Washington D.C. in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May. Ultimately, the show will transfer to Shanghai.

David Henry Hwang, who adapted the book of the musical for the recent Broadway revival, is also expected to be involved with the project. Casting will be announced at a later date.

A performer, director and choreographer, Lee is perhaps best known for her performance as Connie in the original A Chorus Line. She made her Broadway debut in the original production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I. Among her other Broadway credits, Seesaw and Promises, Promises.
