Permoveo Productions will present the world premiere of Jay Paul Deratany's Haram Iran at the Athenaeum Theater, November 6-December 7, with an official opening November 8. David Zak will direct.
The play is based on the true story about two Iranian teenagers in Mashad, Iran in 2005, who were tried and sentenced for the "sin" of homosexuality. According to press notes, the work "involves some nudity, and violence, and a criticism of Iranian politics and their very flawed legal system. This play does not, however critique or criticize Muslims, or the Muslim faith, which is a loving and peaceful religion."
The cast will include Anand Bhatia (Mahmoud), Matios Simonian (Ayez), Nawaf Gasem (Fareed), Anita Chandwaney (Mrs. Marhoni), Ayman Samman (Jailer), Benjamin D. Zavalz (Judge), and Jeremy Cohn (Mr. Rezazedeh).
Portions of the proceeds will be donated to Amnesty International. For more information, visit HaramIran.com.
