Amy J. Carle will replace current star Carla Gugino in the role of Abbie in the Goodman Theatre’s production of Eugene O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms.

As previously reported, Gugino’s departure was part of a pre-production arrangement that a press statement says will allow her “to fulfill press commitments for the releases of her films Watchmen and Race to Witch Mountain, both opening in early March.” Gugino will play her final public performance on February 17 at 7:30 pm, although she will perform in a special student matinee on February 18 at Noon. Carle will play her first performance February 18. The production, originally scheduled to play through February 22, was recently extended through March 1.

The production, which is part of the theater’s two-month-long Eugene O’Neill Festival, is directed by Robert Falls, the Goodman’s artistic director. It also stars Brian Dennehy and Pablo Schreiber, with Boris McGiver and Daniel Stewart Sherman.

Gugino’s other theater credits include the Broadway revival of After the Fall and the Off-Broadway production of Suddenly Last Summer. Carle’s Chicago credits include Honus & Me at Chicago Children’s Theatre, Hedda Gabler at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and Refuge at CollaborAction for which she was nominated for a Jeff Award.
