What if they gave a revolution and nobody came? What are the police to do if no one commits crimes? In The Police, the great Polish writer Slawomir Mrozek exercises his customary wit, steel-trap logic and deft theatricality as he develops this idea to hilarious and disturbing conclusions. When a highly efficient police force has suppressed all disloyalty to the government, it must manufacture fake political dissenters in order to secure the existence of the system. The outcome?
