WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A lost gem from the early days of American realism, and it kicks off City Lit's five-year commemoration of the Civil War during its sesquicentennial years 2011-2015. Augustus Thomas' play follows an Illinois man from the early days of the war through the turn of the 20th century, as he carries the weight of his town's disapproval for his Southern sympathies.
What are other members saying?
A memorable and moving production!
This nearly forgotten play richly deserves this fine revival, beautifully presented by an oustanding, tightly knit ensemble who deliver the piece with more charm and heart than you would ever expect. Its theme, that patriotism may demand a great personal price, is still very timely. In director Kathy Scambiatterras deft hands, it is as suprisingly funny as it is touching. I promise you will laugh and cry, as I did. It is both an enjoyable evening of theater and an important historic work not to be missed.
