Set in pre-Thatcherite London, Otherwise Engaged centers on Simon Hench, a sophisticated, urbane and selfish publisher who wants nothing more than to relax at home alone and listen to his new recording of Wagner's Parsifal. Possessing a razor-like wit and a proclivity for taste and discretion, he tries to keep his family and friends at a graceful distance. One by one, however, they drop in unannounced - sometimes with unabashed honesty - and set into motion a series of truths that ultimately culminates with Hench's life finally catching up with him.
