WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Directed by Amelia Barrett, BTE associate artistic director, I Was a Beautiful Day is a moving and hilarious tale of resilience, survival and cartography. Set in 2005, Dan, a veteran of the first Gulf War has returned home with "shell-shock." He admits himself into a psychiatric hospital, living there for years as he hovers between sadness and contentment, entertained and maddened by his new friend and fellow patient, Lube.
Dan's secret is a lifetime of artwork, mapping the island and his memories in intimate detail. But on the day Dan is told the hospital is closing as part of a nationwide program of reform, a young woman named Anne arrives from Britain's national mapping agency, convinced the veteran's obsession is a treasure-trove for the public good.
