The mundane distractions humans seek to evade the shadow of death define this richly-layered work of multimedia theater that reinvents a classic French New Wave film for the stage. Agnes Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7, shot in Paris in 1961, tracks a marginally-talented pop singer as she wanders the streets, awaiting the results of a cancer biopsy. In Commes Toujours, the film's script is a found object for a story within a story. Live video and a title song by Robyn Hitchcock help shape this intimate portrait of a woman. New York-based Big Dance Theater returns to the MCA Stage for its third Chicago project, this time co-presented with the Chicago Humanities Festival.
