With Closer Than Ever, composer David Shire and lyricist Richard Maltby Jr., collaborators who have worked together for decades, turn their attention to some of their favorite "story songs" that never made it to the stage. With a liberal dose of wit, intelligence and creativity, Shire and Maltby turn an unblinking and frank spotlight on the day-to-day aspects of our lives and loves, relationships and fantasies. Closer Than Ever focuses on a period later in life, offering a keen look at aging, mid-life crisis, second marriages, and role reversals with parents, as well as wicked satirical jabs at Muzak, working couples and unrequited love.
