Banned by the BBC for controversial content, Dennis Potter's Brimstone and Treacle turns the traditional parable of good versus evil upside-down. Tom and Amy Bates, a middle-aged couple living in suburban Britain, care for their teenaged daughter Patricia, tragically paralyzed in a traffic accident. Enter Martin, a mysterious and devilish young man, who slowly ingratiates
himself into their humdrum lives. An apparent answer to Mrs. Bates' prayers, Martin charms his way into the family's good graces. Ultimately, Martin's insidious intentions force us to examine our notions of good and evil.
