Martyr is set to begin performances tonight at Steep Theatre. The play centers on a boy named Benjamin Südel. When he starts espousing Fundamentalist Christian beliefs, the people surrounding him don’t know what to think. His mother and teachers are alarmed and must question whether it is a ploy to get out of classes or something more. The German drama brings to life passion, belief, and manipulation while raising fundamental questions.

The play is written by Marius von Mayenburg and translated by Maja Zade. It is directed by Joanie Schultz and features Cindy Marker as Inge Südel, Kendra Thulin as Erika Roth, Walter Brody as Willy Batzler, Travis Coe as Georg Hansen, Brando Crawford as Benjamin Südel, Claire Saxe as Lydia Weber, Steve Schine as Markus Dörflinger, and Brandon St. Clair Saunders as Pastor Dieter Menrath.

The creative team includes Chelsea Warren (set design), Sally Dolembo (costume design), Sarah Hughey (lighting design), Thomas Dixon (sound design), and Lauren Lassus (stage manager), and Eleanor Kahn (prop design).

Performances will run through May 23.
