Lyric Opera of Chicago's presentation of Charles Gounod's Romeo and Juliet starts performances this evening.

Featuring five iconic love duets and soaring music for chorus and orchestra, Gounod's opera tells Shakespeare's well-known tale of the Montagues and the Capulets, two families who have been at odds for centuries. When Romeo meets Juliet, however, it’s love at first sight. From their very first meeting, the two set into motion a series of events, including duels, a secret marriage, and poison, that will ultimately lead to their tragic fate.

Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher directs. The production features Joseph Calleja (February 22-March 3) and Eric Cutler (March 11-19) as Romeo, and Susanna Phillips as Juliet.

The creative team includes Michael Yeargan (set design), Jennifer Tipton (lighting design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Emmanuel Villaume (conductor), and Michael Black (chorus master).

Performances, which are sung in French with projected English titles, will run through March 19.
