The Gift Theater’s presentation of William Shakespeare's Richard III begins tonight at The Steppenwolf Garage.

Centering on the historically reviled King Richard III (a reputation which Shakespeare’s play is partially credited in creating), the show details the rise and fall of the last king of the House of York. The youngest of three brothers, Richard is an accomplished military leader under the reign of his brother Edward IV. However, driven by greed and bitterness over his physical deformity, Richard begins to scheme for more. Using cunning and deception he slowly eliminates all those in his path to the throne, but he cannot escape the instability he himself has created.

Jessica Thebus directs Shakespeare’s famous history, which stars Michael Patrick Thornton as Richard III. Alongside Thornton is Jenny Avery as Elizabeth, Brittany Burch as Young Prince, John Kelly Connolly as Brakenbury, Thom Cox as Clarence, Olivia Cygan as Anne, Adrian Danzig as Tyrell, Shanesia Davis as Margaret, Greg Fenner as Richmond, Chris Peltier as Dorset, Caroline Lotta as Duchess, Martel Manning as Rivers, Kenny Mihlfried as Tent Attendant, Keith Neagle as Buckingham, Hannah Toriumi as Young Edward, Jay Worthingotn as Catsby, and Kyle Zornes as Hastings.

"We are so proud to have been a supporter of The Gift from their earliest days, and so thrilled, now, to be a small part of this boldly innovative production. The Garage has always been a place where we can push our own artistic boundaries, pursue new interests, and deepen our relationship with those companies whose work challenges and inspires us," said Steppenwolf artistic director Anna D. Shapiro.

Performances will run through May 1.
