World Premiere of An Issue of Blood Begins at Victory Gardens Theater

An Issue of Blood is set to begin its run tonight at Victory Gardens Theater. The play centers on the historic figure of Negro Mary and takes place in Virginia in 1676. At a time when color was not nearly as important as class, Negro Mary was a wealthy landowner. However, she is convinced a curse has been placed upon her family and her land. As she tries to break this curse, she is encumbered by a secret wedding, an interracial love triangle, and a crime of passion. Mary is primed to cheat fate and change the course of history, but if she fails devastation and destruction await.
Written by Marcus Gardley and directed by Chay Yew, the play features E. Faye Butler as Nova Goode, Cleavant Derricks as Dozens Goode, Lizan Mitchell as Negro Mary, Tosin Morohunfola as John Israel First, Steve O’Connell as Constable Mason Esau, and Eleni Pappageorge as Calla.
The creative team includes Myung Hee Cho (set design), Izumi Inaba (costume design), Christine A. Binder (lighting design), Rob Milburn & Michael Bodeen (sound design), Jesse Gaffney (props), Tina M. Jach (stage manager) and Michael Trzos (assistant director).
