Performances of Chimerica begin tonight at TimeLine Theatre.

The show follows the efforts of one photojournalist to find the man behind an iconic symbol of resistance and defiance in the face of tyranny. Twenty years after the rally at Tiananmen Square, "Tank Man" has disappeared from history, leaving only one inspiring image behind, that of a single man standing in front of a military tank during the brutal government crackdown in China in 1989. As the search for the truth of the man behind the myth progresses, a shocking number of similarities as well as differences can be seen between the two superpowers of the age, China and America. In an epic, global adventure, the play takes an unflinching look at the nature of censorship, the cost of truth, and the resilience of hope.

Kirkwood’s play is directed by Nick Bowling, and the cast features Christine Bunuan, Coburn Goss, Cheryl Hamada, Wai Yim, Caron Buinis, Tom Hickey, Dan Lin, Eleni Pappageorge, Chris Rickett, Janelle Villas, H.B. Ward, and Norman Yap.

The creative team includes John Culbert (set design), Sally Dolembo (costume design), Brian Sidney Bembridge (lighting design), André J. Pluess (sound design), Mike Tutaj (projections design), Emily Guthrie (properties design), Megan Geigner (dramaturgy), Eva Breneman (dialect coach), Chris Rickett (fight choreography), and Nora Mally (stage management).

Performances will run through July 31.
