Renee Fleming has been appointed vice president and creative consultant of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, according to a report in The New York Times. In her new position, the soprano will not only serve as music administrator, she will also maintain an active presence on the company's stage.

Among Fleming's offerings at Lyric Opera will be a reprise of her performance as Blanche DuBois in a staged concert of Andre Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire, to be performed in spring 2013. She will also appear in a production of Strauss' Capriccio in the fall of 2014.

Fleming is also scheduled to sing in concert with Dmitri Hvorostovsky on January 7, 2012 and be part of the company's 60th anniversary gala, scheduled to be held on November 1, 2014.

In addition, she will help plan a new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, which is scheduled for the spring of 2013 and will be part of a new series of American musicals that the Lyric will present. Fleming will also curate the world premiere opera for the 2016 season, suggesting the production and the composer and coordinating its various elements.

Fleming's work at the Lyric will also include expanding the company's program with the Merit School of Music to find young singers and make music more accessible.
