First Look: Noah Hadle's Smokefall at the Goodman Theatre

Hadle examines life’s big questions with a highly theatrical world premiere production in Chicago.

Noah Hadle's new play Smokefall is currently enjoying its world premiere at Chicago's Goodman Theatre in a coproduction with South Coast Repertory, running in the Owen Theatre through November 3.

The imaginative plot unfolds over three acts: In Act 1, we meet Fetus One and Fetus Two, the twins with whom Violet is pregnant, as she anxiously awaits their arrival. During Act 2, the extremely well-read and philosophical twins debate, while still in utero, the pros and cons of being born. Act 3 then flashes forward in time as one of the twins, now an old man, reflects on his life as a series of unexpected visitors arrive.

Director Anne Kauffman directs a cast that features legendary Chicago actor Mike Nussbaum (Henry VIII) as the Colonel, Catherine Combs (The Delling Shore) in the roles of Beauty and Blessing, Katherine Keberlein (Boeing, Boeing) as Violet, Guy Massey (Failure: A Love Story) as Footnote and Fetus Two, and Eric Slater (Gloryana) as Daniel and Fetus One.
