Animal Crackers Cast to Perform at Macy’s as Part of "Laugh Out Loud Day"

Cast members from the Goodman Theatre’s revival of Animal Crackers will perform at Macy’s on State Street, on Friday, September 18 at Noon. Mayor Richard M. Daley has declared the date “Laugh Out Loud Day” in Chicago, in honor of the production.

Written by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, with music and lyrics by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby, the show’s action is set in motion when a celebrated piece of art is stolen during a party honoring the African explorer Captain Spaulding. The musical is perhaps best known for its 1930s film adaptation starring the Marx Brothers.

A sneak peek of the show will be presented in the Handbag Department. Chicagoans of all ages can also meet “Groucho Marx,” receive a pair of Groucho glasses, and take home an Animal Crackers-inspired creation from a balloon artist. Additional events will be held at select Loop locations — including Borders and Petterino’s –throughout the day, leading up to the first performance of Animal Crackers at Goodman Theatre at 8pm.

As previously announced, the cast will feature Joey Slotnik as Captain Jeffrey T. Spaulding, along with Jonathan Brody as Emmanuel Ravelli, Molly Brennan as The Professor, Mara Davi as Arabella Rittenhouse, Ed Kross as Horatio Jamison, Ora Jones as Mrs. Rittenhouse, Stanley Wayne Mathis as Hives, Jessie Mueller as Grace Carpenter, and Tony Yazbeck as Wally Winston.
