Goodman Theatre Announces Line-up for Latino Theatre Festival

The Goodman Theatre has announced the show line-up for its fourth Latino Theatre Festival, August 8-24. Curated by Resident Artistic Associate Henry Godinez, the festival will include performances from Latin America, Spain, New York and Chicago in both the Albert and Owen Theaters.

The festival will open with the Chicago Children’s Theatre production of Esperanza Rising, July 12-August 10, an adaptation by Lynne Alvarez, based on a book by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Laura Crotte will explore an adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s Blood Wedding in Al Son Que Me Toques, Lorca, August 8-10, performed in Spanish. Albany Park Theater Project will follow with Aquí Estoy, August 12, their piece composed of two pieces based on interviews about the lives of undocumented immigrants in Chicago.

Teatro Luna will present a staged reading of Tanya Saracho’s Jarred (a Santeria, Brujeria, Hoodoo comedy), August 13, directed by Derrick Sanders, and Culture Clash will bring their brand of satiric comedy with Culture Clash in AmeriCCa, August 14-17, in the Albert Theater. Adriana Sevan will perform her piece Taking Flight, August 15 -17, in the Owen Theatre and there will be staged readings of Our Dad is in Atlantis by Javier Malpica, August 16; Walk Into the Sea by Elaine Romero, August 16; and Little Certainties by Bárbara Colio, August 17.

Aguijón Theater Company will present Raul Dorantes’ adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ The Strangest Kind of Romance, Hasta los Gorriones Dejan su Nido, August 19, in Spanish. Luna Negra Dance Theater will fill the Albert Theatre with Antojito (Sampling of New Works), August 20; Mercedes Gómez Benet’s De La Oreja Al Corazón, a Spanish-language puppet piece directed by Emmanuel Márquez, August 22-24, will be presented with English super titles; and Marta Carrasco and her ensemble will present J’arrive…!, August 21-24.
