Sam Marks, Robert O’Hara, Jason Wells, et al. Set for Steppenwolf’s First Look Repertory of New Work

Steppenwolf Theatre Company has announced the lineup of works that will be presented as part of its 6th annual First Look Repertory of New Work, to run October 27 – November 14. During the event, the theater will offer three developmental productions of new plays presented in repertory, along with three free readings by emerging playwrights.

The festival will open with Robert O’Hara’s The Etiquette of Vigilance, which will run the length of the Festival. Timothy Douglas will direct this piece that is a reconsideration of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and imagines what might have happened to the Younger family after they became the first black family to integrate Clybourne Park.

The event will also feature developmental productions of Sam Marks’ The Old Masters (October 28 – November 14), about a man and a woman who find themselves engulfed by a missing friend’s burgeoning fame as an artist; and Jason Wells’ The North Plan (October 29 – November 14), to be directed by Kimberly Senior, which imagines life in America in the not-so-distant future after a massive government breakdown. Casting, along with the director of Marks’ play, will be announced shortly.

The creative team for all three plays will include Scott Neale (scenic design), Elizabeth Flauto (costume design), Marcus Doshi (lighting design), and Rick Sims (sound design).

The three plays that will receive readings at the Festival are Sarah Gubbins’ That Kid Thing (November 5), Amy Herzog’s 4,000 Miles (November 6), and Laura Marks’ Bethany (November 7).

In conjunction with the festival, Steppenwolf will also continue to offer First Look 101, a three-month experience that takes enrolled participants on a backstage journey through all aspects of the new play development process – from the first rehearsal to the final performance.
