Victory Gardens Names New Ensemble Playwrights
Philip Dawkins, Marcus Gardley, Samuel D. Hunter and Tanya Saracho have been named new Victory Gardens Ensemble Playwrights.
The writers will each have seven-year residencies with the theater, during which time the theater will develop and produce their work and they will be involved in the ongoing business of the organization.
During the 2012-2013 season, the theater will produce Dawkins’ Failure: A Love Story, Gardley’s Chicago is Burning, and Hunter’s The Whale. After the residencies, the playwrights will become members of the theater’s alumni, maintaining an artistic relationship with the theater.
Dawkins’ other plays include The Homosexuals, Perfect, Ugly Baby, and Miss Marx or The Involuntary Side Effect of Living, along with Failure: A Love Story, which will be produced in the 2012-13 Victory Gardens season.
Gardley’s Every Tongue Confess premiered at Arena Stage starring Phylicia Rashad and directed by Kenny Leon. In addition, he has written the musical On The Levee, as well as the plays And Jesus moonwalks the Mississippi. This World in a Woman’s Hands, and Love is a Dream House in Lorin. The world premiere of his play Chicago is Burning will be in the 2012-13 Victory Gardens season.
Hunter won an Obie Award for A Bright New Boise. Among his other plays are Jack’s Precious Moment , Five Genocides, Norway, and I Am Montana (Arcola Theatre, London; Mortar Theater, Chicago).
Saracho has been the lead artist in most of Teatro Luna’s ensemble-devised works including Generic Latina, Dejame Contarte, and The Maria Chronicles, among others. Her plays include: El Nogalar,The House on Mango Street, Our Lady of The Underpass, and Surface Day.
