Cándido Tirado to Be Teatro Vista’s Resident Playwright; 2011-2012 Season Announced

Cándido Tirado will be the newest resident playwright for Teatro Vista, Chicago’s largest Latino theater.

The company will open its 2011-2012 season with an updated version of one of Tirado’s most acclaimed works, Momma’s Boyz (October 23-December 4), directed by Ricardo Gutierrez. In the play, a young man stands by the coffin containing the body of his friend and ponders the events that have led to this sad end.

The season will close with Tirado’s Fish Men (April 7-May 6), directed by Edward Torres, and presented at Goodman Theatre. In the play, a group of urban chess hustlers engage each other in spirited matches on a hot summer day in Washington Square Park, hoping to draw unsuspecting players into a high-stakes hustle.

Teatro Vista’s season will also include a production of Luis Alfaro’s Oedipus el Rey in February-March, 2012. This update of the “mother” of all tragedies and the ultimate story of forbidden love, is set amid the sizzling rhythms of the present-day East LA barrio.
