Karen Zacarias’ The Sins of Sor Juana to Anchor Goodman Theatre’s Latino Theatre Festival

The Goodman Theatre has announced the lineup for its 5th Latino Theatre Festival, to be offered June 19 – July 25. The biennial event will feature the previously announced production of Karen Zacarías’ The Sins of Sor Juana, a portrait of Mexican poet Juana Inés de la Cruz, directed by Henry Godinez, which will run the entirety of the event.

Also part of the festival will be two productions from Cuba’s Teatro Buendía: La Visita de la Vieja Dama (July 8 – 11) and Charenton (July 15 – 18). During the final weekend of the event, new works that have been developed.in the Lark Play Development Center’s U.S./Mexican Playwright Exchange will be presented.

There will also be offerings that will be collaborations with other arts organizations. The Goodman and Grant Park Music Festival will team to present Memory of Fire (July 7), and the family-friendly Sarruga: Insects (July 16 – 18) will be co-presented with Millennium Park. There will also be one-night-only presentations from Chicago’s Latino theater companies-Teatro Vista (El Nogalar, July 17); Albany Park Theater Project (Feast, July 20); and Aguijón (Las Soldaderas, July 21).

Rounding out the program for the Latino Theatre Festival will be an offering from the Latino Music Festival. On July 22, the group will perform The Leader, composed by Gustavo Leone and On “Sor Juana” by Elbio Barilari.
