Spider Saloff to Perform The Roar of the Butterfly at Victory Gardens

Spider Saloff will perform her one-woman musical The Roar of the Butterfly at Victory Gardens’ Richard Christiansen Theater, May 2-20.

With book, music and lyrics by Saloff, along with Jim Sellers and Steve Ramsdell, the show imagines a memorial service for an Asian drag queen known as “Butterfly,” who has been a colorful and inspirational character in the lives of the attendees, including a sharp-tongued Scottish waitress, a faded stage star, a hair dresser from South Philly and a bearded poet.

Saloff has performed the show in California and Melbourne, Australia. As a solo vocalist, she has appeared at such venues as Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland in New York, Green Mill, Fairmont Hotel and Gold Star Sardine Bar in Chicago, and Yoshi’s, The Castro Theatre and the Jazz Heritage Center in San Francisco. She has also been a guest artist with Denver Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Jazz Orchestra, the Willingford Symphony and the Wilmington Grand Opera.

Saloff’s recordings include 1938, Sextet, The Memory of All That, A New Set of Standards, and Cole Porter Live at Maxim’s.
