BIO
Richard Griffiths was born in 1947 in Thornby-on-Tees in England. He learned sign language at an early age to communicate with his deaf mute parents, and as an actor, subsequently became well known for his mastery of dialects. He began his career in radio before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he was frequently cast as the clown. In 1982 he was cast as the lead in the BBC serial Bird of Prey, which led to supporting roles in major films such as The French Lieutenant's Woman, Chariots of Fire and Ghandi. His extensive film credentials also include The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Sleepy Hollow, The History Boys and Goldeneye. At one time he was considered for the role of The Doctor in the original Doctor Who series. British audiences remember him fondly for his portrayal of police officer and pie aficionado Inspector Henry Crabbe in British crime drama Pie in the Sky. In the US he is perhaps best known for playing Harry's uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter series. He won a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for his portrayal of Hector in the Broadway production of The History Boys, a role he originated. His most recent stage appearance was along side his Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe, as Martin Dysart, in the Broadway revival of Equus.
