Marsha Mason’s Broadway credits include Impressionism, the 2005 revival of Steel Magnolias, and the 1996 revival of Night of the Iguana. In the 1970s she starred in Kurt Vonnegut’s Happy Birthday, Wanda June and The Good Doctor, where she met and married playwright Neil Simon. (They divorced in the early ’80s.) Her Broadway debut was in the late 1960s hit Cactus Flower. Other New York theater credits include A Feminine Ending, Wintertime by Charles Mee, Lake No Bottom, The Deerpark by Norman Mailer, and an Israel Horovitz one-act titled It’s Called the Sugar Plum, which premiered alongside The Indian Wants the Bronx starring a little-known actor named Al Pacino. Mason is best-known for her film work, especially the ones penned by Simon: The Goodbye Girl, Chapter Two, Only When I Laugh (all three of which earned her Academy Award nominations), The Cheap Detective, and Max Dugan Returns. The first of her four Oscar nominations was for Cinderella Liberty. Mason’s interests beyond theater have ranged from growing medicinal herbs to taking part in auto race competitions.
