Lin-Manuel Miranda grew up in Washington Heights, a northern neighborhood of Manhattan, which serves as the inspiration for his acclaimed musical In the Heights. In the Heights won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical. Miranda, who also starred in the show, won for Best Original Score. The hit musical premiered Off Broadway at the 37 Arts Theatre in 2007. Prior to its success, Miranda taught Middle School english at his alma mater, and wrote commercial music for various political candidates.
