Julie Taymor made her Broadway directorial debut with Juan Darien. Her sophomore outing, Disney's The Lion King earned her a Tony Award for best direction of a musical. Taymor is the first woman to receive this award. She has subsequently provided direction for The Green Bird and, most recently, Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark. She is widely noted for its visual flair, colorful costuming choices, and use of puppetry. Taymor made her Metropolitan Opera debut with a new production of Mozart's Die Zauberflote. Her film credits include Titus, Across the Universe, and The Tempest. Taymor is a 1991 recipient of the MacArthur "genius" Fellowship.
