Born in Sao Paulo in 1969, Paulo Szot's career in opera started after a serious knee injury dashed his hopes for a career in dance. A finalist in the Luciano Pavarotti Competition in Philadelphia, Szot made his professional opera debut in Il Barbiere Di Siviglia in Sao Paulo in 1997 and has since then performed with the New York City Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Opera de Marseille and Vlaamse Opera. Paulo won the Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Theater World and Tony Awards for his Broadway debut as Emile de Becque in Lincoln Center's 2008 Revival of South Pacific.
