Kate Mulgrew was born in Dubuque, Iowa and is the second eldest of eight siblings. She studied at the Stella Adler Conservatory in New York and received her Associate of Arts degree from NYU before leaving school to pursue acting full time. She landed her first television role in 1975 on the soap opera Ryan's Landing. This led to multiple television appearances including roles in Cheers, Mrs. Columbo, Murphy Brown, Murder She Wrote, and more recently as Helen Donnelly in The Black Donnellys. She is perhaps most recognizable as Captain Kathryn Janeway in the popular television series Star Trek: Voyager. She boasts an extensive theatrical resume both regionally and in New York, including Black Comedy (Roundabout Theatre), Titus Andronicus (Shakespeare in the Park) and Our Leading Lady (MTC). She won an OBIE Award for her performance as Clytemnestra in Signature Theatre's production of Iphigenia 2.0. She appeared most recently on Broadway as Hesther Saloman in Equus.
