A new play by Art Devine Resident Playwright, Art Devine (9-Ball, Winter Wheat, The Bottom of the Sky), finds in inspiration in a little known and understood tragic event in the history of the early 19th century China trade. Filled with exciting action and colorful and passionate people from Salem to the shores of Canton, A Cloud of Canvas explores the incomprehensible persistence of hate and revenge across generations.
Set in 1928, Failure: A Love Story is the very funny, wonderfully whimsical story of the three Fail sisters who live above the family's clock shop near the Chicago River. Youngest to oldest, Nelly, Jenny June and Gerty fall in love and find happiness above the clock shop. An ensemble-based play, this magical story shows that the power of love is far greater than an individual's successes or failures. Through delightful characters and charming musical moments, this is theatrical story-telling at its best.
Based on the novel Washington Square by Henry James, The Heiress is the story of Catherine Sloper, the shy and sheltered daughter of a prominent New Yorker. Caught between the demands of an emotionally distant father and the attentions of a passionate young suitor, Catherine must navigate the terrain of love and regret, desire and duty, a chance for happiness and the burden of fortune… as only an heiress can.
The timeless New York story of society, status, and the true cost of love.
Everybody loves a good mystery! Set in 1992 before the ubiquitous cell phone, this quintessential thriller examines what happens when two successful mystery writers, who have worked together for years, begin to hate each other. Harry has invested well and now lives with his glamorous wife in a luxury, hi-tech apartment high above the Sussex coast. Paul has spent his earnings on liquor and women, and lives in dread of his gambling debts. Harry wants to break the partnership that is Paul's lifeline, but Paul knows a sinister secret from Harry's past. They find themselves locked in a dangerous dance from which murder seems the only escape…and they have just plotted the perfect crime for their latest TV film.
Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland, a state of affairs that―due to his painful shyness―suits him well. Rosemary lives right next door, determined to have him, watching the years slip away. With Anthony's father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families, Rosemary has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. But then, in this very Irish story with a surprising depth of poetic passion, these yearning, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Their journey is heartbreaking, funny as hell, and ultimately deeply moving.
The first production of this explosive comedy-drama after its 2014 Broadway debut. The Velocity of Autumn swirls around Alexandra, a 79-year-old artist in a show down with her family over where she'll spend her remaining years. In Alexandra's corner are her wit, her volcanic passion and the fact that she's barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with enough Molotov cocktails to take out the block. But her children have their own secret weapon: estranged son Chris who returns after 20 years, crawls through Alexandra's second floor window, and becomes the family's unlikely mediator. No sooner are the words "Hi, Mom" uttered than the emotional bombs start detonating.
A special part of the 2015 season will be only the second presentation of this hilarious contemporary tale. Heard last summer in a play reading as part of the new "Cape Playhouse Extras" series, it's Thelma and Louise meets The First Wives Club when divorcees Mary and Jo are suspicious of their friend Liz's new dentist boyfriend. He may look a bit creepy, but is there really anything to worry about? The fact that his oral hygienist was recently murdered could be just a … coincidence. Imaginations run wild as they try to discover the truth, trading their wine glasses for spy glasses in a hilarious off-road adventure.
