WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche star in Roundabout Theatre Company's production of Twentieth Century, by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur in a new adaptation by Ken Ludwig. Walter Bobbie directs.
The play is the comedic story of Oscar Jaffe, a successful and egomaniacal Broadway director, who has transformed a chorus girl, Lily Garland, into a leading lady. As Lily rises to stardom and heads to Hollywood, Oscar begins a career downslide. Bankrupt and on his way out, Oscar boards a train, the Twentieth Century Limited, where he coincidentally runs into Lily again. Oscar pulls out all the stops to persuade the now temperamental star to return for another show.

Alec Baldwin is channeling John Barrymore and Richard Burton these days. Anne Heche is channeling Carole Lombard, Gloria Swanson, and Katharine Hepburn. Julie Halston is channeling Helen Broderick and Eve Arden. Dan Butler is channeling Jimmy Cagney, Barry Fitzgerald, and Roscoe Karns. Stephen De Rosa is channeling Felix Bressart and Hans Conreid. Tom Aldredge is channeling Charlie Grapewin and Clem Bevans. Under Walter Bobbie's suave, Howard Hawks-channeled direction, this busy channel-surfing is making a wave of screwball comedy hilarity in the revival Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of Twentieth Century.
Okay, so this isn't a perfect production. There's too much pushing for volume[...]
